Peyto Lake · Bow Summit · Highway 93N
Forty-five minutes at Bow Summit — the longest Peyto stop of any tour on this road — plus Bow Lake, the Crowfoot Glacier, and the waterfalls at the Jasper end. Crampons included free.
The Experience
The longest scheduled Peyto stop on the corridor, and a route built around water rather than ice.
Peyto Lake appears on almost every Icefields Parkway itinerary, so it looks like a solved problem. It isn’t — because the tours differ enormously in how long they give you there, and Peyto is the one stop on this road where that number decides your experience.
Here is what the tours on this site actually schedule at Peyto:
| Tour | Time at Peyto Lake |
|---|---|
| This tour (featured, $91) | 45 minutes |
| Calgary–Banff Icefield tour ($72) | 45 minutes |
| Homepage tour ($75) | 45 minutes |
| #1 selling day trip ($69) | 30 minutes |
| SunDog Jasper transfer ($258) | 30 minutes |
| Discover Banff all-inclusive ($267) | not scheduled |
Why it matters: you do not see Peyto Lake from the car park. The viewpoint is up at Bow Summit — at 2,085 m, the highest point on the Parkway reachable by road — and getting there means a walk up from where the coach parks. On a 30-minute stop, a good chunk of that is the walk. On a 45-minute stop you get the walk and time to stand there.
If Peyto is the photograph you came for, the number in that table is the specification you are buying.
The turquoise is real, and it has a mechanism. The Peyto Glacier grinds bedrock into a sediment so fine it is called rock flour, and the meltwater carries it into the lake, where it stays suspended rather than settling. Suspended particles that size scatter light back at exactly the wavelengths that read as electric blue-green. That is the colour.
Which leads to the part nobody puts in the listing: the effect depends on melt. It is at its most intense in high summer, when the glacier is shedding the most sediment. Early in the season, the lake can still be frozen, or thawed but pale. Booking a Peyto tour in May and expecting the postcard is the most predictable disappointment on this corridor — and it is entirely avoidable.
From the platform, the shape is unmistakable: a wolf’s head in profile, muzzle pointing down the Mistaya Valley. Once you see it you cannot unsee it.
Worth being clear about, because it makes this route genuinely different from the rest of the corridor: the featured tour does not go to the Columbia Icefield. There is no Ice Explorer and no Skywalk on this itinerary. What it does instead is the water of the Parkway — Peyto, Bow Lake, the Crowfoot Glacier viewpoint, and then the two great waterfalls at the Jasper end: Sunwapta Falls, fed by the Athabasca Glacier’s meltwater, and Athabasca Falls.
That is a real choice, not a compromise. It is also seasonal in an unusual way. The operator runs two distinct itineraries:
If you want the Columbia Icefield as well, take a corridor tour that schedules it instead.
Air-conditioned vehicle, designated pickup and drop-off from four points, GST, and free crampon rental. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure.
Not included: all meals — and the operator specifically warns there are no restaurants or fast-food options at the attractions, so bring lunch. Gratuities are listed at CAD $15 per person, and groups of 6+ have a compulsory guide tip. Luggage, wheelchairs, strollers and infant seats carry a service fee and must be arranged in advance. Read those before you book if any apply to you.
Four pickup points, five stops, and three quarters of an hour above the wolf's head.
Lake Louise Visitor Centre, Banff Caribou Lodge, the Travel Alberta Canmore Visitor Information Centre, or Delta Hotels Calgary Downtown. Air-conditioned vehicle; crampon rental is free.
Cascade Mountain, Castle Mountain and the Vermilion Lakes go by on the drive north — pass-by views, not stops.
The longest scenic stop of the day, at Bow Summit. A walk from the car park up to the platform, and time to actually stand there. Then Bow Lake (15 minutes) and the Crowfoot Glacier Viewpoint (10 minutes).
From 1 April to 30 November the tour visits Sunwapta Falls (30 minutes) and Athabasca Falls (20 minutes). From 1 December to 31 March it swaps to Abraham Lake and its frozen methane bubbles instead, weather permitting.

How long you get there, why it is that colour, and when it isn't.
Anywhere from nothing to 45 minutes, and the number matters. Peyto Lake is viewed from Bow Summit, the highest point on the Parkway reachable by road at 2,085 m, so getting to the platform means a walk up from the car park. On a 30-minute stop, a good part of that is the walk. The featured tour schedules 45 minutes — the longest on this corridor — as do the Calgary tour and the homepage tour. The number one selling day trip gives 30 minutes. The all-inclusive Discover Banff tour does not stop at Peyto at all.
The Peyto Glacier grinds bedrock into an extremely fine sediment called rock flour. The meltwater carries it into the lake, where it stays suspended rather than settling, and particles that size scatter light back at the wavelengths that read as electric turquoise. It is a physical effect, not a filter — and it depends on how much the glacier is melting.
No, and this is the most predictable disappointment on the Parkway. The colour depends on glacial melt, so it peaks in high summer. Early in the season the lake can still be frozen, or thawed but pale. If you are booking in May and expecting the postcard, adjust your expectations or move your date.
From the Bow Summit lookout, not from the shore. The viewing platform sits above the lake, and from there the shape everyone comes for resolves clearly — a wolf's head in profile, muzzle pointing down the Mistaya Valley.
No. The featured tour is deliberately built around water rather than ice — Peyto, Bow Lake, the Crowfoot Glacier viewpoint, and the waterfalls at the Jasper end. There is no Ice Explorer and no Skywalk on this itinerary. If you want the Columbia Icefield as well, take one of the corridor tours in the cards below instead.
The featured tour runs two different routes by season. From 1 April to 30 November it visits Sunwapta Falls (30 minutes) and Athabasca Falls (20 minutes). From 1 December to 31 March it swaps to Abraham Lake instead, to see the frozen methane bubbles trapped under the ice — weather permitting. It is one of the few genuine reasons to drive this corridor in deep winter.
